Recommended by New Books in German: Grigorcea, Jügler, Krauß

NBG

We are delighted that the following Penguin Random House titles have made it onto the Spring 2024 recommendations list by New Books in German:

Dana Grigorcea: The Weight of a Bird in Flight (Penguin)

“Grigorcea’s serpentine exploration plays constantly with the interrelationship between the real world and the world of the imagination. […] With a vivid and evocative sense of place, this is an accessible and engaging treatment of an ambitious subject that will appeal to readers of Ali Smith and Julian Barnes.”

Mayfly Season

Matthias Jügler

Matthias Jügler: Mayfly Season (Penguin)

“A gripping and tense tale of a father-son reunion, dealing with a deeply sinister yet little-known GDR phenomenon. […] The tense narrative is interspersed with fishing tales that give a sense of the turning of the seasons and lighten the mood while maintaining the suspense. Jügler’s clear and unemotional style is reminiscent of the sparse stories of Clare Keegan.”

Martin Krauß: It’s Taking Part that Counts (C. Bertelsmann)

“‘It’s Taking Part that Counts’ is a balanced and self-aware work, which is well-written and researched. […] It challenges and enriches our perception of sporting history.”

New Books in German promotes German-language literature and non-fiction for translation into all languages. Twice a year, NBG convenes expert juries in the UK and the US to select titles from submissions by German-language publishers. The juries, which are made up of translators, agents, editors, publishers, scouts and booksellers, select titles that represent the range of new German-language publications and that they believe have a chance of success in the English-language markets.

With the recommendation of New Books in German, the selected titles not only qualify for potential translation funding by the Goethe Institute, among others, but also enjoy increased visibility with the NBG endorsement.
